popcorn

Popcorn is a type of corn kernel that expands and puffs up when heated. The kernels contain moisture and oil inside a hard outer shell called the pericarp. When heated to a temperature of around 356°F (180°C), the moisture inside the kernel turns into steam, building pressure until the kernel bursts open. The starch inside then expands and cools, forming the fluffy, edible product we recognize as popcorn. It is commonly enjoyed as a snack, especially in theaters, and can be flavored in various ways, such as with butter, salt, cheese, or caramel. Popcorn is also known for its light texture and is often associated with social and entertainment settings.
